If there is a time of year when our winery wakes up in a flurry of frenzied activity and sheer excitement, it’s definitely during the grape harvest. This is the time when the landscape is transformed into a kaleidoscope of autumn colours, when the scent of ripe grapes fills the air and every vineyard becomes a living work of art.

Today I am writing this article to tell you a little bit about what goes on behind the scenes.

Welcome to the enchanted world of the grape harvest in the Langhe, a time when the magic of wine and nature comes to life.

The magic of the grape harvest

Some people think that the grape harvest is “simply” about picking grapes. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. The grape harvest is an experience that engages all the senses.

Imagine being captivated by the sight of ripe bunches of golden or ruby red grapes as the sun stands out generously against the green of the vineyards. An enchanting scene.

And then there is the air, infused with fragrance. The scent of ripe grapes mingles with the smell of earth, foliage and the surrounding nature. Every breath plunges you into a world of autumnal smells.

And then the sounds. The vines are alive with human activity: the sound of secateurs, the rustle of leaves and the thud of grapes being dropped into baskets. It is a sweet symphony that accompanies our hard work.

A necessary effort

What makes this experience so extraordinary is the manual labour and dedication required. As I said, it’s not just a matter of picking grapes, but of doing it expertly. It’s a job that requires concentration for months, from April to September, with a special focus on the arrival of autumn. That’s why we constantly monitor the parameters because the grapes must be perfectly ripe.

Healthy grapes and balanced parameters are the key to obtaining a wine of exceptional quality.
And it’s incredibly satisfying when we finally manage to bring home a whole year’s work on time. We run between the vines, a little bit of anxiety in the air but our hearts full of joy and gratitude, knowing that every bunch of grapes represents a precious piece in the puzzle of our winemaking world.

From the vineyard to the cellar

The grape harvest marks the start of another enthralling chapter in our oenological journey: the transformation of the grapes into must and the winemaking process. This is the phase in which the talent and artistry of our oenologists come into play.

Every oenological choice is carefully considered, because our goal is to obtain a Barolo DOCG of excellence.

The grapes from the different MGAs (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive – Additional Geographical Mentions) must be enhanced with the characteristics of their terroir. The fermentation techniques, the type of wood used to make the barrels, the ageing time.

Geographical Mentions enrich the world of wine, allowing connoisseurs and wine lovers to grasp the diversity that can emerge within the same region. Every detail is studied with meticulous care.

Barolo DOCG: an iconic wine

Barolo DOCG is the heart and soul of our wine production. It is one of the most noble wines, representing the best of the Langhe. Its distinctive characteristics, such as its intense colour, complex bouquet and enveloping palate, make it a veritable jewel of Italian oenology.
Perfect to discover in the season after the harvest, the moment when the king of wines fully reveals all its nuances.

Barolo experience, the tasting that celebrates the king of wines.

The best opportunity to learn more about Barolo is our “Barolo Experience”, a sensory journey to discover all that Barolo has to offer.

A tasting experience that transforms the perception of wine, offering an intimate view of its evolution over time.

A project that was something we very much wanted to pursue and to which we have devoted the utmost care.

The sustainable grape harvest

As you know, I believe, we believe, that every occasion is an excellent opportunity to talk about values. And at the top of our list of values is sustainability. The concept of sustainable harvesting has been an essential requirement for years now. We are aware of the importance of minimising the impact on the environment and adopting sustainable practices, especially at harvest time.

One example is the management of hygiene in the wine tanks.

A considerable amount of water is needed during the grape harvest. To make sure this isn’t a problem, we have implemented systems that allow us to reduce water consumption by up to 65%. Not only is this environmentally friendly, it also helps to preserve a valuable resource.

Moreover, we carefully monitor the temperature during harvest to ensure that the grapes are neither too hot nor too cold when they arrive at the winery. This is essential to minimise the use of energy during vinification.

Sustainable harvesting is a key component of our efforts to protect our land and its beauty, while guaranteeing the quality of our wines.

And at sunset, when a day of hard work, running, laughing, worrying and sharing comes to an end, we are certain of one thing: we are continuing a time-honoured tradition and protecting a precious heritage for future generations.

This is our world, where the grape harvest is a celebration of passion, terroir and sustainability.
