Managing the vineyard in summer
Dear friends,
Summer brings not only sun and heat but also a series of challenges for viticulture. Each year is different and forces us to adapt, learn, and grow. Proper vineyard management in summer is crucial to ensure the quality of the harvest and the health of the plants.
Today, I will share some more technical details that passionate wine lovers will surely appreciate.
Here’s how we tackle the summer challenges in our vineyard.
Biodiversity
One of the most powerful tools to improve the health of our vineyard is biodiversity. Through organic fertilization with mature manure and green manure planting, we enrich the soil with nutrients and make it more resilient. The diverse plants and grasses with their extensive root systems loosen the soil, creating a cooler environment. These roots help keep the soil aerated and improve its structure, making it better suited to retain the moisture needed for the plants during the hottest months.
Soil Work
Another fundamental technique is light harrowing of the soil. This practice prevents moisture from rising from the soil, keeping it cooler below the surface. Superficial tilling helps conserve water in the soil, reducing the need for irrigation and protecting the plant roots from extreme temperatures.
An Alternative Sunscreen!
Managing the vine canopy is a delicate art. It helps to aerate the grape clusters to receive necessary treatment against fungal diseases, but it also protects them from the sun. The leaves act as a natural sunscreen for the grape clusters, preventing sunburn that can compromise the wine’s quality, especially for varieties like Nebbiolo and Barbera. The canopy must be managed to balance light exposure and ventilation.
Challenges of Summer Viticulture: The Ability to Adapt to Change
Each year is different, requiring continuous adaptation. We don’t have total control over nature and often face unpredictable situations. This year, for example, has been cool but challenging with fungal diseases. It will likely be a later harvest compared to others. Accepting what comes and adapting accordingly is a constant challenge, but it is also what makes viticulture so fascinating and rewarding.
